From Fire to Electricity
Early beacons were mere coal fires on headlands, highly inefficient and obscured by their own smoke. Technology progressed to Argand lamps, vaporised oil burners (which functioned similarly to a blowtorch, heating a mantle to incandescence), and eventually highly reliable electric halogen and LED arrays.
