The defining feature of many rock lighthouses is their curved, tapering profile. This is not purely aesthetic. A straight-sided cylinder struck by a massive wave absorbs the full impact. A curve—often modeled on the trunk of an oak tree—directs the force of the water upwards, dissipating its energy.
