The Problem of the Sea
Engineers tasked with building offshore lighthouses face conditions hostile to almost all building materials. Saltwater corrodes iron rapidly. Winter gales apply immense lateral wind loading. However, hydrostatic shock—the impact of tons of solid water accelerating against the masonry—is the primary structural threat.
Foundations
To survive hydrostatic shock, historical stone towers used interlocking dovetail masonry. Each massive granite block was cut to key into the blocks beside, above, and below it, creating a monolithic structure locked directly into the bedrock reef.
Corrosion Mitigation
Modern structures utilise specific marine-grade alloys, cathodic protection systems, and advanced epoxy coatings to combat the relentless electrolytic corrosion caused by salt exposure.
